We are going to look at what a proxy server is and how it works? is it secure? are there different types of proxy servers? Like a VPN a proxy can be used to hide your identity and IP address while on the internet. The use of a Proxy Server allows you to achieve some anonymity and also has some benefits of a VPN. Most people will agree that being secure and hiding your identity and IP address is a good idea. The tricky part is knowing which is the right tool to use in order to achieve this. Both a Proxy Server and VPNs hide your IP address making it appear that your internet connection is originating from another location. But this is all they share.
What Is A Proxy
Simply put a Proxy Server is an application between the internet and your computer, which hides your IP address and makes your online activity appear to originate from another location. This is helpful when you are trying to access a geographically locked region or content, while at the same time remaining anonymous while online.
The Proxy Server does not encrypt your information, and because your information is not encrypted the use of a Proxy Server is best suited for less critical activities where security is a must. You may not want to consider the use of a Proxy Server while conducting bank transactions while online using a public Wi-Fi connection.
Since a lot of Proxy Servers tend to be free many people use them and with overuse, this leads to noticeable degradation of internet speeds. There are many good free options available you just need to find the most reliable and secure ones. Not all Proxies are the same, but the most commonly used ones are HTTP Proxies and SOCKS Proxies. Knowing which one is most suited for you depends on the type of activity you are doing that will require the use of a Proxy Server.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol or HTTP Proxies were designed for use with HTTP. The HTTP Proxy is the oldest of the Proxy Server options. The HTTP Proxy only hides your web browser traffic. The HTTP Proxy may be the preferred choice if you want to maintain anonymity while browsing online.
SOCKS Proxies are different from HTTP Proxies in that SOCKS Proxies do not care which kind of traffic moves through them, whereas HTTP Proxies are used for web-based traffic. SOCKS Proxies are more likely to be used with applications. SOCKS Proxies are a good choice if you want to hide traffic such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol), P2P (Peer 2 Peer) or Bit Torrent.
Pros Of Proxy Use
- Hides Your IP address
- Allows you to access geographically locked services
Cons Of Proxy Use
- Free does not mean good or reliable
- A Proxy Server host can see all of your online activity
- Vulnerable to viruses and Malware
- Unsecured Proxy host
- Slow speeds created from more traffic from other users
- It does not encrypt any data, information, traffic, etc.
Where To Use A Proxy Server
Since Proxy Servers offer no encryption or protection from online threats Proxy Server use is quite limited. However, there may be a few exceptions where you might consider Proxy Server use, such as
If you want a quick way to Block/Bypass a firewall or Geo block
When you are sending or receiving any Non-Sensitive information/data/materials
Where you are accessing anything that does not require protection or you want to hide
If you are using an outdated system/device with limited resources. Proxy Servers are less of a drain on system/device resources and have less impact on system/device performance
If you want to improve system/device performance, proxy Servers reduce bandwidth usage
In The End
Since Proxy Servers basically just hide/mask your IP address and bypass some firewalls and Geo blocks and their lack of security and encryption and leave users vulnerable to viruses, cyberattacks, and data leakage the use of a Proxy server is far too much of a risk to your online security.
Given the fact that Proxy server providers have access and can see all of your online activity, your personal privacy is at risk, when you transmit any type of information over the internet not only does the Proxy provider have access to this information anyone spying on or trying to hack your connection would also have access to this information.
So in the end with all the possible threats we may encounter while online the use of a Proxy Server is for to dangerous. With all the threats to your privacy, and possible access to your information I would not recommend the use of a Proxy server under any circumstances.
