Does A VPN Protect Me? Should I Use One?

Think of your internet protection like an onion, every layer of skin you peel is another layer of security. There are many things you can do to protect your online presence. So does a VPN protect me? Absolutely, the use of a VPN along with some of the steps below will help to give you rock-solid internet security and privacy.Layer Of Protection

Use VPN ( virtual private network ), to add an extra layer of security. Using a VPN service will allow you to encrypt all of your traffic.

Strong unique passwords, use a combination of numbers, upper and lower case letters, also incorporate signs. Avoid using birth dates, names, nicknames, addresses. There are many free apps available that will generate strong, unique, random passwords. The practice of using different passwords for every single online account will ensure even greater security.

Install the antivirus program and update regularly, this will help to reduce viruses, malware. Ransomware that will encrypt files and then demand payment to unlock. Trojan horse programs that seem real but steal your private information. It will also help to stop Bots that can turn your computer into a zombie, which then can be controlled and deny access, send spam, basically can be made to do anything the Bot controller wants.  Antivirus Software

The use of Two Factor Authentication although it may be a pain, will make your accounts more secure, and like an onion add an extra layer of security.

The use of different email addresses for different accounts will help to secure sensitive accounts, for example, a bank account. If you receive a phishing email that looks like your bank, to an email account you have set up for a social media account you will immediately know it is not real.

Clearing cache, web history, cookies, and searches will help to eliminate all the personal data your browser stores. Which in turn will prevent someone from accessing family information, home address, etc?

Securing your Wi-Fi with a password helps to protect your online presence. Doing this will prevent unwanted access to your information. Some thieves have been known to slowly drive up and down streets for unsecured Wi-Fi access.Secure Wi_Fi

The use of a mobile security app to protect your phone. Download antivirus program, along with scanning for virus, malware some mobile antivirus apps may support remote wipe, so you can securely remove data if the phone is lost. GPS tracking to remotely locate.

Following these steps and incorporating a VPN service will help to keep your online presence secure. Most people don’t think they are vulnerable while using mobile devices and would-be thieves are looking to exploit this.

  1. Definitely an additional layer of protection should never be negligible! It has also several practical functionalities; for instance, during my last vacations to the Caribbean, my wife and I were too much into a NetFlix series watching (It was banned to our vocational territory)… the solution: Getting a VPN and setting our server location to the home nearest address and done deal.

Forme is not that important for any other reason. If I were expending or using online baking with a certain frequency I’d be looking for getting one immediately.

Thanks for your recommendation on increasing our own security; by the end of the day, each one of us is the first responsible for our own security.

    • Absolutely, Jaun we are all responsible for our security,  Thank you for taking time to read and comment on my article and found it informative.  I’m happy you can see the benefits of a VPN service, and shared a real world experience where the service would have provided you with the ability to access your paid NetFlix service, as this is one of the many benefits of subscribing to a VPN service.  take care, and all the best

  2. Even the least important people on earth, if they have an online device, need antivirus software. As for a VPN, I see those more for people doing a lot of business that attracts unwanted online attention. This especially goes for people who do a lot of traveling and don’t want the local authorities getting wound up if they decide to make monetary transactions with companies in a nation that country doesn’t like. People who do a lot of business with cryptocurrency should have a VPN.

    • Thank you for taking the time to read, Cathy I agree unfortunately there is that element that would be inclined to use a VPN for such transactions, my article was written for the average user that may not be aware the use of public Wi-Fi sites could put your privacy and information at risk.  I personally was the victim of credit card breach while using a public Wi-Fi fortunately my credit card company informed me and I was able to cancel card. Since then I use VPN while conducting any online transactions.
